Welcome to Roots of Tranquility in Leeds/Bradford; Complementary Therapies for health, relaxation and renewal

Hello, my name is Ruth

I am fully insured and registered with the Federation of Holistic Therapists. I take pride providing an exemplary, professional complementary therapy service for females only. Using knowledge and skills obtained with the first NHS complementary Therapy training course at Harrogate General Hospital.

I am qualified in ITEC level 3 Reflexology, Swedish Massage Therapy and Daoyin Tao. I am also a level 2 Reiki practitioner. I obtained a diploma in clinical Aromatherapy through the Penny Price Academy. I have 38 years of nursing experience, including 9 years working in Palliative care. I currently work as a complementary therapist in a hospice.

I always conduct a personalised free consultation to find out more about your physical and emotional health, fitness and treatment expectations. This enables me to provide a bespoke treatment tailored your individual needs.

I specialise in treating clients who are going through difficult periods in their life and supporting emotional well-being, including cancer care, elderly care

and people with long-term conditions. I have many years experience caring for people with sensitivity and compassion at the most challenging times. This also expand to their loved ones and people who have been recently bereaved.

Reflexology

Reflexology is derived from ancient Chinese medicine relating to the meridians of the body, this is based on the concept that there is a map of the body on the feet/hands, and by gentle pressing of these reflex points the trapped energy is released in correlating parts of the body. Reflexology has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety and improve feelings of well-being. It’s a great way to just switch off from the hectic world around you and engage with your body.

Massage

Massage therapy is an excellent way to relax, it can smooth away stress, improving circulation and lymphatic drainage, aiding cellular regeneration and removal of toxins. It also helps loosen stiff joints and soothes the nervous system, unknotting muscle tension and relieving aches and pains. The power of touch is hugely underestimated and is very nurturing, research has shown that touch can reduce cardiovascular stress, may lower your blood pressure, and stimulate the production of Oxytocin, a feel good hormone.

Reiki

Reiki is a complementary therapy that involves encouraging the healthy flow of the body's energy. It is of Japanese origin, with "Rei" meaning "universal" and "Ki" meaning "life force energy." Reiki is not affiliated with any religion but is based on the belief that the practitioner channels energy through touch to activate the body's natural balancing process and promote physical and emotional well-being.

Reiki is given while fully clothed in a quiet, safe environment. It is not a massage; Reiki practitioners channel energy through their hands to the recipient using gentle holding and hovering techniques on and over your body, with the treatment usually taking place while you lay on a massage couch. During your session, you may experience sensations of heat, cooling, or tingling in the areas being treated.

Reiki is an excellent way to restore and rebalance. I recommend having a Reiki treatment alongside massage or reflexology, as it is particularly effective at the end of my "full works" treatment.

Daoyin Tao

Daoyin Tao is a deeply relaxing head, neck, ear, shoulder and face massage, incorporating gentle soothing massage with acupressure treatment.

Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy, consisting of gentle pressing to the acupressure points to help the flow of energy, which restores balance in the body by releasing trapped energy. This wonderful treatment embodies the theories of yin and yang and the five elements, pulling together eastern and western techniques.

Daoyin translates to “the soft way” and Tao represents the quality of energy and life, and the interaction between nature and self, translating to “the way” of the universe and the flow of life.

Full Works Treatment

The full works is a wonderful experience, lasting two hours involving a full body massage, reflexology treatment followed by Daoyin Tao.

This treatment can be tailored to your needs, components can be interchanged, by replacing one of the above with a Reiki treatment. Alternatively, you could try a 90-minute holistic treatment combination of your choice.

This is a truly stupendous way to really switch off and engage with your body and promote optimal relaxation.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years and was very evident in ancient Egypt. It is the controlled use of plant (essential) oils for therapeutic benefits. There are many essential oils with diverse properties, a blend can be made tailored to your specific needs. Aromatherapy can be used to enhance your massage experience, not only does it provide a wonderful aromatic ambience, the oils continue to be absorbed into your skin to promote healing and wellness. Essential oils can be used in many other ways, such as diffuses, steam inhalation, room and pillow sprays, or in bath and body products.

Some frequently asked questions...

What should I expect before a treatment?

Prior to your treatment, a consultation will take place to establish your expectations. You will be asked about your medical history, allergies, contraindications, and any presenting problems.

During your treatment, you should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move easily.

Alcohol and heavy meals should be avoided before and after your treatment.

Please read terms and conditions prior to booking. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

What should I expect after a treatment?

It is important to allow time to relax and unwind after a complementary therapy treatment, as your body can react in dfferent ways. Some people can feel fatigued, this is a normal reaction to the release of toxins from your body. Rest is the best way to deal with this. Most people experience a deep sleep the night after receiving complementary therapy and feel more refreshed the following day.

Sometimes you may feel energised after your treatment and occasionally, some people experience what is known as a healing crisis, again, this is the bodies natural way of healing itself and it is nothing to worry about. But if you have any concerns, please contact me and I will be happy to answer any questions.

What if I feel uncomfortable during a treatment?

Prior to your treatment, you will be given an opportunity to express if there are any parts of your body that are sensitive to touch, or any areas you prefer not to be massaged.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you feel uncomfortable in anyway during your treatment and the plan can be modified to your comfort level.

How can complementary therapies help?

Treatments can help improve sleep, stimulate circulation, lift mood and reduce anxiety by increasing the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin and oxytocin.

During your treatment, it is good to focus on relaxing and breathing.

Are complementary therapists regulated and insured?

It may be surprising to know that complementary therapists are not regulated by law in the UK. However, it is considered good practice for therapists to be fully insured and registered with a professional body, such as the FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapists) or CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council), which set standards and ensure their members are professionally trained, insured, and up to date.

It is important to check a therapist’s credentials before booking a treatment. Members of the public can consult the registers of these organizations to confirm that their therapist has met standards for safe and competent practice. Roots of Tranquility is fully insured and registered with the FHT.
